The 464th Bomb Group Short Rounds

Part 2 - From Aaron Emerson
Shadowboxes created for Aaron's Grandfather - Bill Emerson (778)

The shadow box with the medals

This shadow box was created for Bill Emerson. Bill was a B24 right wing machine gunner in the 464th Bombardment Group, 778 Squadron.

The medals in this shadowbox are all Bill's. (Click on the thumbnail image on the right to open a larger version in a new window.)

Bill's Air Medal. The Air Medal is awarded to any person who, while serving in any capacity in or with the Armed Forces of the United States, shall have distinguished himself/herself by meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight. (More information about this medal and others awarded to our Group here. [Photo] Bill Emerson's original Air Medal.

Bill was awarded the Purple Heart after being struck in the cheek by a piece of flak while on a mission. One of the two times Bill was forced to bail out after being shot down he suffered a broken back, but he was not awarded a second Purple Heart as there was no blood shed at the time of that injury.

Bill was interned in Switzerland the second time he was shot down. The surviving crew members made it to Switzerland to be interned. This is Bill's identification badge from the internment. [Photo] Bill Emerson's (778) Swiss Intern ID.
All of these items sat in storage until I went through them in 2000 and surprised my grandfather with this shadow box from our entire family.
